3 Possible Reasons Why Your Disability Claim Was Denied

Law Blog

If you are unable to work, you are probably looking to receive social security disability to help you cover your bills, medical costs and household expenses. Unfortunately, however, it isn't uncommon to have your disability claim denied.

Although you might expect things like not being fully disabled or not having a permanent injury to prevent you from getting disability, you should know that there are plenty of other things that can get in the way of having your claim approved. These are a few rather unexpected yet common reasons why you might be denied for disability. By avoiding these things, you can help improve your chances of getting the disability that you need.

1. Your Physician Didn't Submit the Proper Paperwork

You are going to need documentation from your doctor to show that you are truly disabled. Your physician might be asked to send this documentation to your lawyer -- if you have one -- or to the social security administration. The paperwork should tell about your diagnosis and should also have letterhead for the doctor's office or hospital and other basic contact information. Ask your doctor to be careful to submit all of the necessary documentation during this process.

2. Working While You're Waiting for Benefits

Although you might feel as if you need to work in order to get by until you receive your social security disability, you should know that working can get in the way of your claim getting approved. It could appear as if you aren't actually injured to the point where you can't work if you are actually working, even if doing so is a threat to your health.

3. Not Following Your Doctor's Treatment Suggestions

If you are suggested to take certain medication or seek other treatment and you don't do it, then the disability administration might think that you aren't trying to get any better. Even though you might think that you know what's best for your health, you should know that failing to follow your doctor's treatment suggestions can negatively affect your disability claim. Unless you have serious fears of surgery or other treatments, then it's critical to follow your physician's treatment advice.

As you can see, there are a few different things that can cause your disability claim to be denied. Although you might not expect it, these three things can all cause issues. Therefore, it's best to avoid these things if you don't want any problems with getting approved.
